Month-End Made Easy: The Essential Bookkeeping Checklist for Entrepreneurs
The end of the month is here—which means it’s time to give your books a little love! As a business owner, I know how overwhelming it can feel to juggle all the things. That’s why I created a simple, sustainable, DIY tool and a straightforward checklist just for my fellow “doing it all” entrepreneur girlies.
Let’s walk through it together so you can end your month feeling clear, confident, and ready to take on the next one.
Month-End Bookkeeping Checklist
1. Categorize Your Transactions
Every single income and expense transaction should be tagged with a category that reflects what it actually is. This helps you track where your money’s going—and ensures your reports are accurate.
2. Reconcile Your Accounts
Download your bank, credit card, and loan statements. Make sure the ending balances match what you see in your bookkeeping software. It’s a quick check to make sure nothing slipped through the cracks.
3. Compile Your Receipts
Keep your receipts organized, especially for things like business meals or big purchases. Digital folders or a receipt app work wonders here.
4. A/P & A/R (Accounts Payable & Receivable)
Make sure all bills are paid and all invoices have been sent for the prior month. Follow up on any overdue payments—it’s your money!
5. Review Your Financials
Look for any red flags or surprises in your Profit & Loss statement. Are expenses higher than usual? Did something not perform the way you expected? Dig in and ask why.
6. Pay Yourself & Set Aside Taxes
You worked hard—make sure you’re paying you! Plus, set aside a percentage of your profit for taxes so you’re not caught off guard later.
